The Inn is able to give scholarships and awards to the value of over £700,000 a year. Most of these awards are for those undertaking their Bar Vocational Course, and the remainder go to those in their CPE and/or pupillage years. In general, when assessing applications, the Scholarships Committee pay particular attention to:
i. Academic achievement ii. Intellectual and personal qualities iii. Extra-curricular activities and achievement iv. Potential for successful practice at the Bar v. Temperament and motivation vi. Mooting and/or debating experience
Consideration will also be given to the financial circumstances of each candidate in deciding the amount of any scholarship or award.
Equal Opportunities
Gray's Inn Equal Opportunities policy includes the following: "It is the will and intention of the Inns of Court that the law and Codes of Practice relating to Equal Opportunities and the prevention of discrimination be followed in the spirit as well as the letter. If unfairness or discrimination on grounds of race or sex is found to have occurred it will be speedily and effectively dealt with and eradicated." A complete copy of the Inn's Code, and of the complaints procedure, is available on request from the Under-Treasurer.
References
Irrespective of which scholarships or awards a candidate is applying for, two references are required. References should be from people of standing, who are NOT relatives, and who have known the candidate for at least one year. Students typically ask lecturers, teachers, barristers, employers, etc. It is helpful if the referees can express an opinion as to the candidate's performance/potential in relation to the qualities which the Scholarships Committee concentrate on, as listed in the introduction (see above). Candidates must arrange for the references to be sent by the referees to Quinn Clarke, Student Officer. Do not leave your application until the last minute as referees may be away and not contactable. Selection procedure On receipt of applications, a short-list is drawn up by the interview panel for those to be interviewed. Candidates will receive a letter to inform them whether or not they have been selected for interview. Short-listed students will be interviewed by a panel of three, including at least one Bencher, and assessed on the criteria set out in the Introduction (see above). Interviews typically last for about 15 minutes.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Please note that candidates may apply for a scholarship/award to one Inn only. Multiple applications are not allowed, and the Inns circulate one another with a list of applicants for all scholarships and awards. Successful applicants must have joined that Inn and no other if the money is to be paid. Candidates may apply to the Inn for more than one scholarship or award in any one year, but , with the exception of awards made on the basis of performance in the BVC, will not be granted more than one scholarship or award in any one year.
ANY STUDENT WHO MAKES A MULTIPLE APPLICATION TO THIS AND ANY OTHER INN, OR WHO JOINS ANOTHER INN, WILL NOT BE ENTITLED TO THE GRANT OF A SCHOLARSHIP OR AWARD FROM THIS INN. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS RULE APPLIES TO ALL FOUR INNS.
