Congratulations on obtaining tenancy! First and foremost, if you are a Gray's Inn member and have not yet registered your tenancy with the Inn and also with The Bar Standards Board then you must do so as soon as possible. The Bar Council introduced the New Practitioners' Programme on 1 October 1997 for barristers in their first three years of independent practice. This was extended on 1 October 1998 to barristers entering employed practice.

In the first three years’ of practice, newly qualified practitioners are required to complete a minimum of 45 hours of accredited continuing professional development (CPD), including at least 9 hours of advocacy training and 3 hours of ethics. The New Practitioner courses run by the Inn satisfy all the advocacy and ethics requirements. The Inn also runs an Ethics only session (3 hours) once a year. In addition, barristers who commenced pupillage on or after 1^st October 1997 are required to complete a course in forensic accounting during their pupillage year or by the end of their first three years of practice. After the first three years of practice, barristers are required to undertake 12 hours of CPD each year.
