New Practitioner Courses

Gray's Inn runs a specially designed programme for New Practitioners to obtain all their advocacy and ethics hours over one weekend. Venues are located in Surrey and Northamptonshire in order to cater for New Practitioners based outside London as well. Gray's Inn aims to provide specific training for barristers from all areas of practice, using a variety of exercises, most written by members of the Inn. For example, as well as the standard civil and criminal cases we have also have family and employed Bar cases run at certain weekends.

The training team consists of a group of six New Practitioners and is taught by a real judge and two experienced trainers. Our November weekend incorporates the examination in chief and cross-examination of psychiatrists, as we recognise the need for practitioners to be confident in handling expert witnesses in court.

Our programmes are run twice a year (May and November) and New Practitioners are required to prepare thoroughly the exercises, attend a case analysis session and to submit skeleton arguments in advance of the weekend. The courses are open to members of all four Inns.

We also run an Ethics only session (3 hours) once a year.
