Reminder of deadline
Applications and references should be made by the penultimate Friday in July before commencing pupillage; Viva voce interviews for short-listed candidates will be held in September preceding the start of pupillage.

General conditions

The scholarships for the pupillage year are awarded to students of exceptional merit. They are a mark of great honour and to reflect this, the scholarships will be conferred by the Treasurer on Call da y.

Each scholarship is conditional upon the successful candidate having passed the BPTC examinations unconditionally at his/her first attempt. (Applications should be made before the commencement of pupillage).

The Arden Scholarship

Founded in 1873 and named after Joseph Arden (1799-1879) admitted 1831, Called 1840, Bencher 1875.

Pictured is the window located in Hall which features Arden’s coat of arms and commemorates the foundation of the Arden Scholarship.

Joseph Arden was well-known as a collector of papyri and of contemporary art.
The Atkin Scholarship

Founded by the Inn in 1948 in memory of Lord Atkin of Aberdovey (James Richard Atkin, 1867-1944).

Admitted 1887, Called 1891, Bencher 1906, Treasurer 1914 and 1937.

Known for his decisions in Donoghue vs Stevenson in 1932 (the “snail in the bottle” case) and Liversedge vs Anderson in 1942.
The Mould Scholarship

Established by the late will of James Mould QC (1892-1958).
-
Admitted 1919, Called 1923, Bencher 1950.
-
Also qualified as an electrical engineer with a PhD in 1921 and later specialised in patent and design cases.
The Reid Scholarship

-
Established in 1975 by the gift of Lord Reid (James Scott Cumberland Reid, 1867-1944) shortly before his death.

Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, Honorary Bencher 1948.
